Sevilla to play 'responsibly' against Spartak Moscow: manager

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Sevilla manager Eduardo Berizzo said his squad would strive to keep possession and focus on safe plays against Spartak Moscow in their Champions League match on Tuesday.

Sevilla will be looking to consolidate their lead in Group E against the Russians, who have had little success against Spanish sides in the past.

Berizzo’s men lead the group with four points, earned from a 2-2 draw with Liverpool and a 3-0 win over Maribor.

Liverpool and Spartak, who each have two draws, are two points behind the Spanish side.

“Tomorrow we will try to play our game. We will be responsible with the ball,” Berizzo told a news conference in Moscow on Monday. “We will play carefully.”

The Argentine highlighted the pace of Spartak’s forward line but insisted his club would focus on keeping the ball and playing their own attacking style.

“We do not use our defence as a weapon,” he said. “We will play attacking soccer. We are a team that keeps possession of the ball.”

Sevilla are coming off a 1-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao at the weekend, which saw them fall to fifth place in La Liga.

“This is already in the past,” forward Nolito said.

“It’s unfortunate to lose because we always want to win. But we hope we can come back with a win here.”

Spartak, now fifth in the Russian Premier League with five wins in 13 matches this season, have lost their last three games against Spanish clubs.

Manager Massimo Carrera said that his squad would need to be at their best for any chance of getting a result.

“They don’t have weaknesses,” he said of Sevilla.

“We have to play an ideal match from a technical and a tactical point of view.”
