HONG KONG (Reuters) - Beijing Guoan won the Chinese FA Cup on the away goals rule on Friday after a 2-2 draw at Shandong Luneng left the two-legged clash level at 3-3.
Guoan took the lead 16 minutes into the first half when Jonathan Viera outstripped the Shandong defence before beating Han Rongze with a low shot into the corner.
Shandong levelled — both on the night and on aggregate — 15 minutes later when Gil netted from close range after goalkeeper Hou Sen could only parry Diego Tardelli’s low free kick.
Yet Zhang Xizhe gave Beijing an invaluable second away goal nine minutes from fulltime when he headed in from the edge of the six-yard box meaning Tardelli’s last minute header was not enough to deny Roger Schmidt’s team.
Beijing’s first win in the competition since 2003, and their first trophy since winning the Chinese Super League in 2009, secured their spot in the group phase of next year’s Asian Champions League.
Shandong, meanwhile, will go into the playoff phase of the continental championship, where they will meet either Bangkok United from Thailand or Vietnam’s Hanoi FC.
