Soccer: Success the tonic as sickly Saints bounce to action

SOUTHAMPTON, England (Reuters) - It might seem success is the greatest tonic, after Southampton reported a full bill of health for their match at Huddersfield this weekend in the wake of their pulsating 3-2 win over Arsenal.

The likes of Jack Stephens, Cedric Soares and Mario Lemina all rejoined the squad in training this week ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip.

“Five guys rejoined us this week so I have worked with 23 players... I can see now that everyone wants to jump on the train because it is leaving the station,” smiled Saints new coach Ralph Hasenhuettl.

“It can be a coincidence that everyone is fit now again. Maybe they are feeling that we are building up something interesting and they all want to be a part of it.”

Former RB Leipzig coach Hasenhuettl, who replaced the sacked Mark Hughes on Dec. 5, instantly injected dynamism into the struggling Saints and on Sunday they inflicted on Arsenal a first defeat in 23 games, and in so doing clinched their first win in 13 league games.

Sitting one place above the relegation zone, only on goal difference, back-to-back wins would be most welcome for Hasenhuettl as they play the second-from-bottom side.

“We are sure it will be an enormously hard game that we are facing,” the Austrian said.

“I think if we have the same passion, character and mentality — and we will need it — then we have a good chance to beat Huddersfield.”
