Southampton's Boufal doubtful after kitchen table injury

LONDON (Reuters) - Southampton’s Sofiane Boufal added to a list of bizarre soccer injuries on Thursday when he was declared doubtful for the weekend Premier League game against Watford after stubbing his big toe on a kitchen table.

Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl told reporters the 26-year-old Morocco midfielder had not been able to train for the last three days.

“Sofiane Boufal hit his toe at home on the table, the big one,” said the Austrian. “It’s a little bit swollen still and it would be a little difficult for the weekend I think, but next weekend yeah.

“It’s not broken or something but it’s very swollen and that’s the problem.”

Asked for more information about the incident, Hasenhuttl continued: “He runs through the kitchen and hit against the table, or something like that.”

Saturday’s match at St Mary’s pits Southampton, second-last and without a win in their last eight league games, against bottom side Watford.

Boufal, who joined from Lille in 2016, has played in 10 of Southampton’s 13 league games this season.

Hasenhuttl said midfielder Stuart Armstrong was ruled out with a hamstring problem he suffered against Arsenal five days ago.

“He is not able to play at the weekend. Maybe two weeks I think he is out and then after the Newcastle game maybe again an option,” said the manager.

Danish centre back Jannik Vestergaard is back in training after recent sickness.
