Soccer: Allegri finds unlikely hero in third choice goalkeeper

MILAN (Reuters) - Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri picked out third choice goalkeeper Carlo Pinsoglio as the unlikely hero of their double-winning campaign on Sunday, even though the 28-year-old did not play a single game all season for the Turin side.

Allegri, whose side clinched a seventh successive Serie A title after drawing 0-0 at AS Roma on Sunday, said that Pinsoglio’s dedication was typical of what he wanted to see in his squad.

“It does not make sense to pick names but I’m happy for Pinsoglio, who arrived after two difficult years in Livorno and Latina and integrated into the group with a great enthusiasm,” he said.

“The lads are the greatest architects of this and I thank them. Having a team with human values as these players have them makes it easier to reach all your targets.”

Although a Juventus player since 2014, Pinsoglio was loaned in successive seasons to lower league sides Modena, Livorno and Latina before spending the current season at the Turin side.

Juve have won league and cup doubles in each of their four seasons under Allegri, something the coach said was “unlikely to be repeated.”

“Winning is never easy and the lads approached the game in the right way,” he said. “We managed and controlled the game in the best way.”

“I think the greatest strength was keeping calm in all situations,” he added. “You reach the final objective with one small step at a time. If you get overwhelmed by enthusiasm, you’re going to collapse three days later.”

He said there was no danger of Juventus easing up.

“At Juve, the motivation is always there,” he said. “Next season, there will be players who will arrive and others who will leave.

“The goal is to add more victories and that, when March comes around, we are still involved in all competitions.”
