CURITIBA, Brazil (Reuters) - Atletico Paranaense beat Bahia in a shootout to qualify for the semi-finals of the Copa Sudamericana on Wednesday after their all-Brazilian tie ended 1-1 over two legs.
Defender Douglas Grolli got the only goal of the game for visitors Bahia just seconds before half-time to level the tie in a tournament that is considered South America’s equivalent of UEFA’s Europa League.
The home side were dominant in the shootout, however, winning it 4-1.
Atletico will play Fluminense in the semis after the Rio de Janeiro club’s victory over Nacional of Uruguay earlier in the day.
In the other semi-final, Colombian side Santa Fe will meet the winner of Thursday’s tie between Argentina’s Defensa y Justicia and Colombia’s Junior.
