- Argentina, winners in 1978 and 1986, have qualified for 11 consecutive World Cups starting with West Germany 1974. Iceland, are competing in their first ever World Cup finals.
- Iceland have not won since January, a run of four games without victory.
- Argentina scored 19 goals in the South American qualifiers, the lowest by a qualifying team since the single-group format was adopted ahead of the 1998 finals.
