EPA says Harvey's floodwaters may contain disease hazards including bacteria

WASHINGTON, Aug 31 (Reuters) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said on Thursday that floodwaters from Tropical Storm Harvey could contain bacteria and other disease agents as sewers overflow.

In a joint statement with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the EPA said precautions should be taken by anyone involved in cleanups including boiling water when advised to by local and state authorities. The biggest threat to public health now that the rain has ebbed is ensuring that people have access to safe drinking water and that waste water systems are being monitored, the EPA said.
