FPL will shut two nuclear plants if Irma hits Florida -spokesman

Sept 7 (Reuters) - Electricity generator Florida Power & Light said on Thursday it would shut its two nuclear power plants in Florida ahead of Hurricane Irma’s winds if the storm hits the state.

FPL generates enough power for about 1.9 million homes at the plants, Turkey Point and St. Lucie, which are along the Atlantic Coast in Florida about 20 feet (6 meters) above sea level. “We will be shutting down the nuclear plants well in advance of any hurricane force winds approaching,” a spokesman told reporters in a press conference. He would not comment on when the plants would be taken down or how long they could be shut. (Reporting by Timothy Gardner)
