Nadal cruised to a 6-1 6-2 6-4 win to set up a last-16 clash with home favourite Nick Kyrgios, who needed nearly four-and-a-half hours to win 6-2 7-6(5) 6-7(6) 6-7(7) 7-6(8) against Russian Karen Khachanov.

Kyrgios leads 2-1 in his head-to-head record on hardcourts against Nadal, but lost their previous meeting on grass at Wimbledon last year.

Fifth seed Dominic Thiem set up a clash with France’s Gael Monfils after overcoming Taylor Fritz 6-2 6-4 6-7(5) 6-4.

There were more upsets in the women’s draw, with Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina and Belinda Bencic all falling to straight-set defeats.

Former world number one Garbine Muguruza thrashed Svitolina 6-1 6-2, while Czech Pliskova lost 7-6(4) 7-6(3) to Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Sixth seed Bencic struggled to find any sort of rhythm in a 6-0 6-1 hammering by Anett Kontaveit of Estonia.
