NEW YORK (Reuters) - A look at the form and records of Switzerland’s Roger Federer and Argentine Juan Martin del Potro ahead of their quarter-final match at the U.S. Open on Wednesday (prefix number denotes seeding):
3-Roger Federer (Switzerland)
Federer turned 36 last month but appears to be getting better with age and is chasing a third grand slam title this year after winning Australian Open and Wimbledon.
The Swiss has still not quite fully recovered from the back injury that forced him to withdraw from Cincinnati last month but has shown mental toughness to see off his first four opponents at Flushing Meadows.
24-Juan Martin del Potro (Argentina)
Del Potro, whose careered has been plagued by wrist injuries, produced one of the performances of the tournament when he came back from two sets and two match points down to steal a fourth round victory over Austrian Dominic Thiem.
While Federer holds a 16-5 head to head advantage against Del Potro, the Argentine has won their only previous encounter at Flushing Meadows in 2009, which gave him to his only career grand slam title.
