Top Senate Democrat calls for extending federal flood insurance program

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Democratic leader Charles Schumer said on Tuesday that the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey in Houston shows why it is important for Congress to extend the National Flood Insurance Program before it expires at the end of September.

“As we have seen with Hurricane Harvey, extreme weather events are becoming more and more frequent and therefore, flood insurance options are even more necessary. The bottom line is that we need the NFIP and Congress must not allow it to expire,” Schumer said in a press statement.
