Vedanta's Thootukudi copper smelter to remain shut until June 6 - lawyer

NEW DELHI, May 17 (Reuters) - Vedanta Resources Plc’s Thootukudi copper smelter, one of India’s biggest, will remain shut until at least June 6, said a lawyer petitioning against the plant reopening.

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has adjourned a hearing to grant Vendanta a renewal of consent to operate the smelter until that date, said V Ramasubbu, a lawyer fighting the reopening.

The pollution board rejected Vedanta’s license to operate the smelter in April, saying the company had not complied with five local environmental laws.
