Japan Airlines Co Ltd - Smoke forces JAL aircraft passengers to evacuate in Hokkaido - KYDO

Japan Airlines Co Ltd:Smoke filled the cabin of a Japan Airlines Co. plane that had its takeoff delayed due to heavy snowfall at Chitose airport in Hokkaido on Tuesday afternoon, forcing the evacuation of 159 passengers and six crew members - KYDO.At least four passengers were injured when evacuating the Boeing 737 aircraft via inflatable slides, according to rescue officials.The four passengers were all taken to hospital for treatment. Smoke was seen coming from the aircraft's right engine at around 3 p.m., according to the airline and the transport ministry.The aircraft had been scheduled to depart the airport at 2:20 p.m. bound for Fukuoka.According to police investigating the accident, the engine stalled after sucking in snow, causing a loud noise and then a malfunction of some sort when the pilot restarted it.The engine then failed to turn off, despite attempts by the pilot to shut it down.The pilot initially reported seeing flames coming from the right engine, but JAL later said it could not confirm that fact. Local firefighters also said they did not find any sign of fire damage to the engine.The Japan Transport Safety Board decided to dispatch four investigators to the airport to look into the cause of the incident.  Full Article
