Iranian commander killed in U.S. air strike

A damaged car, claimed to belong to Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al Muhandis, is seen near Baghdad International Airport, Iraq January 3, 2020. Iran promised vengeance after a U.S. air strike in Baghdad killed Soleimani, Tehran's most prominent military commander and the architect of its growing influence in the Middle East. Soleimani, a 62-year-old general who headed the elite Quds Force, was regarded as the second most powerful figure in Iran after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The attack also killed top Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, an adviser to Soleimani.
