Tycoon offers $64 million to wed lesbian daughter

Sept. 27 - The lesbian daughter of a Hong Kong business tycoon receives a flood of marriage proposals after her father offers tens of millions of dollars to any man who manages to marry her. Simon Hanna reports.

This is Gigi Chao from Hong Kong - who has suddenly been inundated with marriage proposals from thousands of men. But Gigi isn't interested - she's openly gay - and this was what prompted her property tycoon father to offer over 60 million U.S. dollars to any man who becomes his son in law. (SOUNDBITE) (English) GIGI CHAO, DAUGHTER OF TYCOON CECIL CHAO: "I wasn't angry at all, I was really quite touched, and very... how should I say? Moved, by daddy's announcement. I mean, it's really his way of saying baby girl, I love you. 'You deserve more', basically." Gigi says that her and her father remain very close. The 33 year old - who has reportedly received a church blessing in France with her partner of seven years - says her father just can't accept her sexual preference as an open lifestyle. (SOUNDBITE) (English) GIGI CHAO, DAUGHTER OF TYCOON CECIL CHAO: "It's obvious that he doesn't accept his daughter being gay, first of all, but he doesn't accept it as a social statement. He can accept it, sort of, as in the closet lifestyle choice, but not as a social statement." Homosexuality was decriminalised in Hong Kong in 1991, though gay marriage is still not recognised by law.
