Clashes as Peru students protest

June 15 - University students in Peru clash with riot police in the historic city of Cusco as they protest an education law that could privatize universities around the country. Lily Grimes reports.

Stones rain down on Peruvian riot police as they try to calm protests by angry university students. The city of Cusco, better known as the capital of the Inca empire, has seen several days of demonstrations against a proposed education law. Students say it could privatise universities. The bill is currently under debate in the Peruvian congress. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) UNIDENTIFIED STUDENT FROM THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SAN ANTONIO ABAD, SAYING: "The government is trying to privatise the universities and we are not going to allow that. The people and the students will demand our rights and we demand that the autonomy of the university be truly respected." Cusco's National University of San Antonio Abad was temporarily closed down during the unrest. Police were called in to reopen the institution and four of the university's students were arrested.
