Battle for Aleppo

The Syrian Army and rebels fight fierce battles in the center and north of Aleppo, as part of a major government offensive to retake the rebel stronghold. Gavino Garay reports.

The Syrian army has released video of a firefight between rebel and government forces in Aleppo. It's part of a major Russian-backed offensive by the Syrian government to retake the strategic city, which has become a focal point in the years-long war. Aleppo is the last urban stronghold of a revolt against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that began in 2011. Russian war planes also struck rebel-held areas north of Aleppo. Over the past several months, rebel fighters claim Moscow and the Syrian army have been targeting power plants, hospitals and bakeries in Aleppo to force the nearly 250,000 people trapped there to surrender. Rights groups have condemned an air strike on an Aleppo hospital, which France says constitutes a war crime. Rescue workers say at least 34 were killed in the fighting.
