Democratic efforts to flip Georgia's Sixth Congressional District moved closer to reality Tuesday, with 30-year-old Jon Ossoff getting the most votes but not enough to secure an outright victory. The result forces a runoff election in June, and Ossof says he's confident. (SOUNDBITE) (English) Jon Ossoff, Democratic Candidate, saying: "There is no doubt this already a victory for the ages." Ossoff emerged with just over 48 percent of the vote. The race was seen as a bellwether of the national mood during President Donald Trump's first few months in office. The President weighed in on race, targeting Ossoff with robocalls and tweets. (SOUNDBITE) (English) PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: "Only you can stop the super liberal democrats... and in particular, Jon Ossoff." Trump won the district in November but only by 1 percentage point. (SOUNDBITE) (English) Karen Handel, Republican Candidate, saying: "I think the President is interested in what happens here." Republican candidate Karen Handel finished second with 19.5 percent of the vote. She'll now face Ossoff in the June 20 runoff. (SOUNDBITE) (English) Karen Handel, Republican Candidate, saying: "It's been a competitive campaign. No coronation -- which occurred on the Democratic side." An Ossoff win would not tip the balance of power in Washington, as Republicans control Congress and the White House. But it could weaken the aleady shaky hold Trump has on his fellow Republicans.
