A teen-angst musical took top prize at the Tony Awards on Sunday (June 11). "Dear Evan Hansen" was a surprise hit of the season, and it tallied up a total of six Tonys, including best musical actor for 23-year-old newcomer Ben Platt. "And finally to all young people watching at home, don't waste any time trying to be anybody but yourself because the things that make you strange are the things that make you powerful. Thank you," said Platt. Bette Midler took home top actress for her part in a revival of "Hello Dolly!," which took home four awards. "I can't remember the last time I had so much smoke blown up my my ass, but there is no more room, so thank you, this is the cap, this is the cherry on the cake," said Midler. Among the other winners, Michael Aronov won a surprise featured actor award for his role as an Israeli negotiator in "Oslo," a behind-the-scenes look at the 1993 Middle East peace accords that also won best play. First-time Tonys host Kevin Spacey kicked off the show with his own self-aware song referencing both the award nominees and his self-doubt compared to previous hosts Neil Patrick Harris and Hugh Jackman. Broadway's had a record-breaking season this year, partly thanks to last year's Tony winner and pop culture phenomenon 'Hamilton.'
