Hundreds of transgender supporters protest in Times Square against U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to ban transgender soldiers. Ryan Brooks reports.

The rainbow flag flying high in New York on Wednesday (July 26) protesters rallying against President Donald Trump's surprise move to ban transgender soldiers from the U.S. military. "We are together and we will rise up together and we will resist this president," said New York City Public Advocate Letitia James at the rally. Hundreds gathered in Times Square, angry at Trump's announcement that was made over Twitter- Among those stunned by the decision, transgender veteran Jennifer Long. "There's a lot of shock. It was completely unexpected. I don't think anybody in our community expected such a message to come across, especially such a message that sets policy and affects so many lives," said the 29-year U.S. Army veteran. Last year, former Defense Secretary Ash Carter suggested there were about 4,000 transgender members serving in the military. . The White House says it hasn't yet decided whether or not they'll be immediately thrown out. The decision has won Trump some favor in his conservative base, but it's also sparked bipartisan backlash among lawmakers. Senator John McCain, the most prominent military veteran in Congress calling the presidents announcement unclear and inappropriate. And top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi hitting back at Trump's claim that trans soldiers are a costly burden on the military pointing to a report that puts the cost for the Defense Department's healthcare budget at one-one-hundreth of 1 percent.
