Chantek, a male orangutan who was among the first apes to learn sign language, died at age 39 at Zoo Atlanta. The zoo said Chantek was being treated for heart disease. But the official cause of death has not yet been determined. Chantek was taught by a trainer who raised him like her own child. He learned how to clean his room and memorize the way to a Dairy Queen restaurant. Zoo officials say Chantek had an engaging personality, used sign language to communicate with zoo keepers... and will be deeply missed.
