Challenging the gender paygap... one coffee at a time. This is Handsome Her, a cafe in the Melbourne suburb of Brunswick. (SOUNDBITE) (English) "HANDSOME HER" OWNER, ALEXANDRA O'BRIEN SAYING: (PART OVERLAID SHOT 5) "One week out of every month we have an 18 percent premium for men, which is the same amount as the gender pay gap." The "gender surcharge" is optional and is donated to a women's charity. So far no male customer has refused to pay it. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED CUSTOMER SAYING: "I think it's fair if you think about the world and then gender inequality that we have." (SOUNDBITE) (English) "HANDSOME HER" CUSTOMER, PHIL DEMPSTER SAYING: (PART OVERLAID WITH SHOTS 10 AND 11) "Considering there is a fair, yeah, it's a fairly unequal pay gap between men and women." The official pay gap in Australia has lingered between 15% and 19% for the last two decades - it'll take a lot of lattes to even it up. But the vegan cafe is doing its bit. It also offers priority seating for women, while encouraging respect for both genders.
