Colombia makes record $360 million cocaine bust

Colombian police seize the largest cocaine haul in the country's history as they crack down on excess production by gangs who are stepping into void left by FARC rebels. Graham Mackay reports.

It may be the world's number one cocaine producer, But even Colombia has never seen a bust like this. Police on Wednesday (November 8) hauling in a record 12 tonnes of the drug linked to the Gulf Clan, the country's top criminal gang. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) COLOMBIAN PRESIDENT, JUAN MANUEL SANTOS, SAYING: "Today, thanks to a police operation with overseas intelligence, the largest seizure in history was made. Never before, since we began fighting against drugs more than 40 years ago, have we had a seizure of this size." It was the result of a three day operation by police who are cracking down on rising coca cultivation as gangs move in to fill a void left by the Marxist guerilla group FARC. Authorities have pledged to send more than 80,000 police and army troops to areas the group used to control to try and stop new trafficking gangs from taking hold.
