Leonardo da Vinci's "Salvator Mundi" oil painting of Jesus Christ sold for $60 in 1958... but when it goes up for auction in New York Wednesday night, it could sell for more than a hundred million. The piece is one of fewer than 20 known paintings by da Vinci still in existence, says Conor Jordan of Christie's Auctions. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CHRISTIE'S DEPUTY CHAIRMAN OF IMPRESSIONIST AND MODERN ART FOR NEW YORK, CONOR JORDAN, SAYING: "The sheer thrill of having a Leonardo da Vinci in the in the building and on view is quite something." The oil painting is thought to be around 500 years old. Its whereabouts were unknown until it reemerged in poor condition in a Louisiana auction house in 2005. The painting has since been restored and was on display in London last month before coming to New York in time for the auction. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CHRISTIE'S DEPUTY CHAIRMAN OF IMPRESSIONIST AND MODERN ART FOR NEW YORK, CONOR JORDAN, SAYING: "Not only does it add public excitement around the sales and it brings in perhaps more people than would normally come through our doors, but it also sparks all sorts of great conversations around the art and adds a greater richness I think to the sale season." A piece of richness that Christie's has described as "The Last da Vinci."
