MUMBAI | Wed Apr 27, 2011 3:06pm IST

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Award-winning Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja, who was convicted of raping his maid, has been granted bail by the Bombay High Court, his lawyer said.

The 37-year-old actor was sentenced to seven years in prison last month after a court found him guilty of raping his maid in his Mumbai home, which he subsequently appealed in the Bombay High Court.

He has been granted bail and the only condition is that he cannot leave the country without permission. There are no other conditions, Ahuja’s lawyer Srikant Shivade told Reuters.

Ahuja won a slew of awards for his 2003 debut film - the critically acclaimed "Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi". He has maintained his innocence throughout the judicial process.

Both the films he was working on during his trial have been completed but are awaiting release. He is married and has a daughter.
