NATURAL ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) The sixth annual Beijing International Film Festival (BIFF) kicked off in China's capital on Saturday (April 16) with domestic and international celebrities stealing the spotlight on the red carpet. Fifteen films were nominated for the Tiantian Awards and the winners will be announced next week. Film director Brett Ratner, who is also the executive producer of "The Revenant", showed up at the event. He will preside over the jury for the festival's Tiantan Awards. The other six members of the jury are German director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, Romanian director Corneliu Porumboiu, Bosnian director Danis Tanovic, Japanese filmmaker Yojiro Takita, Hong Kong director Teddy Chan and Chinese actress Xu Qing. China is posing a steep challenge to the North American film market - still the world's largest - but where box office growth has stalled. In February, monthly ticket sales in China exceeded those in the United States for the first time, propelled by local hit "The Mermaid" and the week-long Lunar New Year holiday. China's box office revenues grew 51 percent in the first quarter of 2016, with total sales of tickets in China reaching 14.5 billion yuan (1.57 billion pounds) in the first three months of the year, said China National Radio. The sixth BIFF runs from April 16 to 23.
