ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) An explosion hit a large mosque in rebel-controlled Idlib on Friday (May 27) a monitor said, with Reuters still images capturing the aftermath. The blast was caused by a car bomb at the Shuiab Mosque, said the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and eyewitnesses, who recorded images said to show the aftermath. There were casualties, the observatory said. Idlib, in northern Syria close to the Turkish border, is controlled by opposition groups including the Free Syrian Army, Islamic Front and the Nusra Front. An announced cessation of hostilities brokered by the United States and Russia in February has been punctuated by car bomb attacks and outbreaks of fighting between various groups fighting for control of Syrian territory. A U.N. sponsored peace process has floundered on U.S.-Russian disagreement on which groups to include in a wider truce and on the fate of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
