Hooded attackers entered the National Gratitude Catholic Church in Santiago after a student protest. The church and a statue of Jesus Christ were damaged. The attack followed a protest by students in the Chilean capital over what they see as broken promises on social and economic reforms. The country's Interior Ministry's condemning the attack on the church. So too are student groups who say the vandalism was the work of people on the fringe with little understanding of their cause and principles. The students' anger has been fuelled by the government's dilution of promised reforms due to budget constraints. They're warning of more protests to come, stepping up the pressure of recent weeks on the government of President Michelle Bachelet.
